Lying Out Loud (Kody Keplinger) BOOK REVIEW | No Spoilers

Ahoy!

Lying Out Loud is actually a companion novel to the New York Times bestselling book: The D.U.F.F.   My friend tells me that it is good although I haven't read it, and I found out that you don't have to have read The D.U.F.F to understand Lying Out Loud.

In a nutshell:

Sonny Ardmore is a professional liar and soon her lying gets out of control and she has to lie her way out of another lie.

The Actual Review

Ok, I wanted to love this book. I've been in the mood to find a new favourite recently and this sounded like it fit the bill. It didn't.

I haven't read any of Keplinger's other books, but I won't be in a hurry to go and get them. The writing, the writing is brilliant, engaging and readable. But the story, well the story was childish. It was set in a generic place (typical high school) which was inhabited by cliché characters (Hot new boy, friends that are polar opposites, terrible parents, ever-so-supportive parents and the cool older brother) and a plot I would've expected to have found on the online writing sites I go to sometimes.

The characters were infuriating. Sonny just expects everything to go her way, pushes her best friend around and manipulates the people around her and then puts herself into a solitary confinement of sorts and cries when the going gets tough. Amy lets everyone push her around and 'Fierce Amy' just didn't seem believable. Ryder is pretentious. And Mr and Mrs Rush are so forgiving, I can't forgive.

But! I would have given this two stars but there was a cliffhanger and I love cliffhangers, so I will give it a bonus point.

Star Rating:
⭐️⭐️⭐️

Conclusion:

- The characters are cliché
- The plot is generic
- If you like a good cliffhanger, this one's for you

  1. I already bought my copy of this but haven't gotten into reading it yet. I'm excited to read this but most people reviewed this and saying that it wasn't as good as The DUFF, etc. I can't wait to start this one! Thanks for your thoughts, Hannah! :)
