The Graveyard Book (Neil Gaiman) - Book Review NO SPOILERS

Ahoy!

Sometime last year I was lent the Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman, and back in June I finally got round to reading it! Here today, I present a what-I-call book review.

In a nutshell:

Nobody Owens, known to anybody who knows him as Bod, has lived in a graveyard since his parents were killed when he was just a baby, is growing up and venturing further and further into the living world. The book tells the story of him as he grows up, makes a few friends and enemies and most importantly - looks for his family's killer.

The Actual Review:

This book had quite possibly, one of the slowest starts in history (perhaps a slight exaggeration). For me it took me quite a few chapters to get into a reading cycle, I was in fact, seriously considering not continuing, but, for some reason, I carried on reading and a few chapters in, I really started to like it!

My favourite chapter was the one with the bullies (isn't that an episode of Friends?!) because it reminded me of my brief encounter with bullies (although they never wanted my lunch money or to pack a punch in my face - I might write about that sometime) and I just wish I had read it at the time, so I could have had something to say!

The characters are well developed, if not a little confusing at times when it comes to the Jack's of All Trades and some of the graveyard inhabitants. I wasn't constantly annoyed with what Bod, or Scarlett or Silas was doing! Gaiman definitely made me feel about the characters what he wanted me to do: he wanted me to admire Bod and Scarlett, he wanted me to be curious about Miss Lupescu and Silus, he wanted me to hate the bullies, he wanted me to hate the Jack's and guess what? I did.

Favourite Quote: "You are obvious, boy. You are difficult to miss. If you came to me in company with a purple lion, a green elephant, and a scarlet unicorn astride which was the King of England in his Royal Robes, I do believe that it is you, and you alone that people will stare at, dismissing the others as minor irrelevancies."

Genre: Young-Adult
            Macabre
